Not a word, or almost. Kamala Harris’ speech at the Democratic convention in Chicago last week left those who had hoped to see her loudly and clearly put climate at the top of her priorities wanting more. The candidate for the American election barely mentioned the importance of “breathing clean air, drinking clean water, and living without the pollution that is causing the climate crisis.”
Unlike Joe Biden, who made climate change a central focus of his 2020 campaign, Harris and her supporters were surprisingly quiet on the issue throughout the convention. “Climate activism would have galvanized young voters, but it could also have alienated potential supporters in Pennsylvania, a gas-rich swing state,” Kevin Book, a consultant at ClearView Energy, told Bloomberg.
