Summer is conducive to burglaries. But another period favored by burglars arrives just after … Here is when the figures increase again.
It is well known, the number of burglaries explodes during the summer, when everyone goes on vacation, often in a foreign country, or in France, far from the family home. Indeed, thieves are waiting for the most appropriate moment to take action, when they are almost safe that the accommodation is unoccupied. Unfortunately, it is not only the summer period that the thugs are watching. On the return from vacation, another period is likely to interest them and it arrives much faster than you think.
Indeed, according to the “2025 burglard agenda” report disseminated by verrisure, certain periods remain particularly risky. According to figures from the Ministry of the Interior, there are 53,741 burglaries over the months of April to June 2025. But there is also a peak in burglaries in October with 9% of attempts, and for good reason: these are the next school holidays, on the occasion of Toussaint. But another period is even more awaited by thieves and it is during these specific months that the majority of incidents take place, warn the experts.
The months of November and December concentrate the greatest number of burglaries, and it is no coincidence. The shorter days and the early fall of the night offer more discretion to thieves. It is also a period when housing is often unoccupied, between prolonged weekends, vacation departures or end-of-year races. The houses and apartments are filled with gifts, purchases related to the holidays or promotions of Black Friday, which attracts burglars even more. Result: near one out of five burglary takes place during these two months, according to the Observatory of Home Security.
Finally, contrary to popular belief, intrusions do not only take place at night: in 2024, just over half of the attempts (50.3 %) took place between 9 p.m. and 7 a.m., but almost a third (30.2 %) occurred in the afternoon, between 2 p.m. and 9 p.m., and almost 8 %in the morning. On the calendar side, weekends are the most exposed: Friday alone concentrates 15.7 %of burglaries, followed very closely by Saturday (15.5 %) and Sunday (15 %). These slots coincide with weekend departures or prolonged absences, leaving particularly vulnerable housing.
