Yet there was little room for doubt. The vote had been closed in the United States for two weeks and the counts and recounts invariably gave Joe Biden the victory. But… But Donald Trump, almost entrenched with his teams in the White House, was not giving up.
Tweeting frantically and in capital letters that he had won the American presidential election. The administration of the social network, which did not yet belong to Elon Musk, had responded by moderating Trump’s messages and alerting users.
It was almost comical, but far from anecdotal. The accusations of cheating in which Trump had managed to involve a significant part of the population triggered a deep institutional crisis.
This denial of defeat by Trump led directly to the storming of the Capitol by his supporters on January 6, 2021. A moment when American democracy faltered. Even as the country likes to present itself as a model of democracy, its complex political and electoral systems regularly put it to the test.
