One thing is certain, this bedroom had had its day. The new owners of the premises did not hesitate to offer a completely different function to this room, as they liked the architect’s ideas.
Quite a challenge for architect Rémy Bardin, who had to juggle floors and ceilings that were far from straight, while decompartmentalizing a living room that couldn’t be done. A daring project, but essential to restore order and gain comfort in this 62 m² space.
At the request of a young dynamic couple, looking for an optimized and colorful interior with a Brazilian touch, the architect worked with each constraint to meet their desires: opening the kitchen and the living room by tearing down a load-bearing wall, imagining a more spacious and practical bathroom and even providing a hammock for a relaxation area. All in an old building in the 18th arrondissement, which obviously hasn’t simplified anything.
In just four months of work, carried out by MMD Construction, the project (re)came to life. On the other side of the old load-bearing wall was the apartment’s only bedroom. From the period, it was fitted out with imposing wooden cupboards, which occupied an entire section of wall and imposed their massive silhouette. The antique chandelier, suspended from the ceiling, recalled the classic style of the place, as did the padded headboard. At the back, a door opened onto the corridor and gave a glimpse of the kitchen, accentuating the impression of a space left in its original state. Between pink hues, bulky furniture and elements from another time, the room just needed to be lightened up to reveal its true potential.
Opened up by Rémy Bardin, it breathes again, in the form of a dining area in sunny tones. In the center, four bright yellow chairs invite you to gather around a round table with a conical base. On the floor, the original Hungarian point parquet has undergone a beautiful facelift and today adopts a honey color which reflects light throughout the apartment. At the back, a light wooden display shelf contains everyday crockery and a few trinkets. On the living room side, a monstera takes height, proudly placed on a wooded crate, too.
The whole thing exudes the joyful simplicity of an apartment where every detail counts, but where nothing is there to give itself a genre. We fell in love with this dining room inspired by travel memories where it’s good to come together.
