The Lombardy Region is at the forefront inintegration of artificial intelligence (AI) into the education systemestablishing a board of experts dedicated to developing innovative guidelines for teaching AI. The goal is to promote an ethical, inclusive and future-oriented education, in a context of rapid technological change.
This is what was announced at the conference organized at Palazzo Lombardia entitled ‘”The art of learning. Artificial intelligence in teaching”. The meeting was attended by the Minister of Education and Merit, Giuseppe Valditara, the President of the Lombardy Region, Attilio Fontanathe regional councilors Simona Tironi (Education, Training, Work) e Alessandro Fermi (University, Research and Innovation).
The board of experts will present the first guidelines in September. An experiment is already underway in three schools in Lombardy, in Milan, Cologno Monzese and Colico, with the aim of extending the project to other institutes. Regional councilor Tironi highlighted the relevance of this initiative: “An important project, especially in step with the times we are living in, with an unprecedented change in society, dictated by technological innovation and also by artificial intelligence. Today, more than 65% of children already use AI in their daily lives, often without knowing it, and use artificial intelligence to do their homework, develop essays and prepare lessons“.
The board of experts, led by Lorenzo Maternini, member of the Artificial Intelligence Commission of the Presidency of the Council, pursues ambitious objectives. Is committed to implementing risk- and ethically-based guidelines, inspired byAI Act, to promote the ethical use of AI, respecting human rights and individual freedoms. Furthermore, it will develop strategies to prevent the misuse of AI by educating students on ethics and responsible use of this technology.
AI will be taught in schools to ensure equal opportunities for all students, in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 4. The use of AI tools for personalized education will be promoted and a holistic and interdisciplinary educational approach will be promoted. Students will learn to use data analysis tools, improving their analytical and interpretative skills.
Education on the responsible use of AI will involve not only students, but also parents and teachers, promoting appropriate use of the technology and mitigating associated risks. The Board will prepare students for the world of work, providing fundamental skills in the use of AI.
“It is an initiative that will not only modernize our education system, but It will also ensure that our students are prepared to face the challenges of the future with advanced skills and train their critical spirit. We do not have the ambition to believe that we alone are right, but we want to be the first to spark discussion and reflection on a topic so treated and discussed”, commented councilor Tironi.
This initiative by the Lombardy Region represents a courageous step towards the integration of AI into the education system. By providing students with the skills needed to understand and use AI responsibly and ethically, Lombardy is positioning itself as a leader in the education of the future, paving the way for a new era of education in which AI becomes a fundamental tool for the training of young generations.
