What is the birth bonus?
Financial assistance for the arrival of a child
Childcare equipment, clothes, diapers… preparing for the arrival of a baby is expensive. And even very expensive, if you have to change car for a more spacious one or move to accommodation offering a real room for the new member of the family. To help future parents meet these numerous expenses, CAF can pay them a birth bonus, the amount of which varies each year.
A family allowance paid by Caf
This system is part of the Paje, the Childcare Benefit, which also includes the basic allowance, the Shared Child Education Benefit (PreParE) and a supplement for free choice of childcare. It is aimed at anyone residing in France, whatever their nationality.
Who is entitled to the Paje birth bonus?
Declare your pregnancy before the end of the 3rd month
To benefit from the birth bonus, the future mother must submit to the first prenatal medical examination. Then she must declare pregnancy before the end of the 3rd month of pregnancy with the CAF and its Primary Health Insurance Fund (CPAM). A formality usually managed by the general practitioner, so do not hesitate to ask him or her.
Meet the general conditions to benefit from family benefits
The future mother must meet the general conditions to benefit from family benefits and therefore the birth bonus. Here they are:
- reside in France for more than nine months or meet the conditions for the right to stay in France and be in a regular situation
- not exceed a certain level of resources depending on the situation of the recipient.
Income conditions for the child’s parents
Last condition, household income must not exceed a certain ceiling. The latter varies depending on the family situation of the recipient. The situation (number of people in the household, dependent children, etc.) and resources are examined by the Caf in the seventh month of pregnancy. Please note that the unborn child is counted as a dependent child.

What is the resource ceiling that must not be exceeded to receive the birth bonus?
The income of the tax household for year N-2 taken into account
The birth bonus is paid subject to means testing. To be eligible, your income from year N-2 must not exceed a certain threshold. For a birth in 2025, the categorical net income of 2023 is taken into account. Depending on the family situation – single parent or couple – and professional situation in the household – number of income -, the ceiling will not be the same.
There are two earned incomes from the moment each person in the couple has received an annual amount of 5,983 euros or more (in 2023) from professional activity or daily compensation for a work accident or occupational illness.
Resource ceilings in force until December 31, 2025 depending on the couple’s situation
Income ceilings n-2 not to be exceeded for a single parent
A couple with a single income from work and one child must not have exceeded the 36,461 euros of resources in 2023 to obtain the bonus in 2025, while the ceiling for a single parent is set at 48,186 euros. Here are the other ceilings depending on the number of dependent children:

What is the amount of the 2025 birth bonus?
Amount for the birth of a child
For the year 2025, the birth bonus granted for a new child amounts to 1,066.31 euros.
Amount for the birth of twins or triplets
Good news, this assistance is proportional to the number of children you are expecting. The premium will be doubled for the arrival of twins and tripled if three babies are expected. So, if you are expecting twins in 2025, the premium will be 2,132.62 euros. The amount will increase to 3,198.93 euros for triplets.
Amount for adoption
Regarding adoption, the amount of the birth grant amounts to 2,132.63 euros.
To note : a simulation of the amounts to which you are entitled is accessible on the CAF website.

When is the birth bonus paid in 2025?
Paje premium payment date
Since April 1, 2021, the birth bonus is paid on the last day of the calendar month following the 6th month of pregnancy. It was previously paid at the latest before the end of the last day of the 2nd month of the baby’s arrival.

How to apply for the birth bonus from CAF or MSA?
Of course, the pregnancy must have been declared. This formality is carried out, using your Vitale card, by your doctor or midwife before the 14th week of pregnancy. You must then make your request for the birth bonus (Paje) on the CAF website, whether or not you already receive benefits from the Family Allowance Fund.
For members of the agricultural social mutual, this request must be made on the MSA website. The request is studied during the 6th month following the start of pregnancy.
Family allowances: conditions, ceiling and amount
Birth bonus for a 2nd baby in 2025
A bonus paid for each new birth
The CAF birth bonus is paid to each newborn. Whether you are expecting your second or third baby, you are entitled to this assistance if you meet the resource conditions. The number of dependent children is taken into account when granting the birth bonus. The greater the number of children in the household, the higher the resource ceiling will be.
The amount varies depending on the number of children
Thus, a couple with a single income, a dependent child and an unborn child will have to earn less than 43,753 euros (in 2023), while this maximum threshold will be 52,504 euros with three children.
For large families, with four or more children, simply add to this ceiling the sum of 8,751 euros per additional child. As for the “birth bonus” or the “birth package” of mutual insurance companies, it is generally paid to each newborn. No resource requirement required.
Aid for the school canteen: conditions, request and amount
What mutual aid is available for the birth of a baby?
An amount not subject to means conditions
Future parents are often unaware of this: the majority of mutual insurance companies also help their members to cover expenses linked to a birth. Unlike the CAF bonus, this sum is not subject to any resource conditions. The amount of this aid is quite variable, ranging from 50 euros to 1,000 euros, with an average envelope of 200 euros. A significant boost that deserves to be taken into account when you opt for complementary health insurance.
Take out your health insurance before the start of pregnancy
Be careful, however, of the waiting period practiced by mutual insurance companies. To be sure to benefit from this birth bonus, choose your supplementary contract before the start of your pregnancy. This bonus will be paid to you after childbirth: then send your insurer a copy of the updated family record book or birth certificate. Take the opportunity to register your baby on your complementary health insurance and review your mutual insurance guarantees.
