There is a simple and effective way to keep burglars away, without having to invest in expensive devices. It is neither an armored door nor an alarm, but something much more formidable for intruders.
In France, more than 218,000 burglaries were recorded in 2024, or one burglary every two to three minutes, according to the Ministerial Statistical Service for Internal Security. Although this figure has decreased slightly in recent years, the intensity of break-ins has increased, with increasingly violent intrusions. To protect themselves, many homes opt for security solutions: alarms, armored doors, surveillance cameras or even motion detector systems. These devices offer a certain peace of mind, but their effectiveness sometimes depends on the speed of an intervention or their regular maintenance.
However, there is another way, even more deterrent, which instantly scares away burglars. These latter are rare to dare to enter an apartment or a house when the owners are absent, quite simply because they will not venture onto the premises in the presence of a dog. But some breeds are particularly suited to guarding and recognized for their ability to effectively protect a home, much more than any electronic system.
Among the most formidable dogs that ensure the security of your home, we find breeds such as the German Shepherd, renowned for its intelligence and loyalty, or the Rottweiler, whose imposing build is often enough to deter. The Malinois, used by law enforcement for its speed and attentiveness, or the Mastiff, strong and quiet, are also popular choices against intruders. These dogs all have strong protective instincts and are particularly wary of strangers. Martine, who has four dogs, including a German Shepherd, tells us that she trained him to let anyone in, but that he wouldn’t let anyone out… unless his mistress gave her consent. “Once, the burglar stayed until the police intervened, and was forced to put everything back where it was“, she explains to us. But most of the time, scammers don’t really take any risks: a barking dog inevitably attracts the attention of the neighbors.
To complete the security of your home, there are other simple but effective actions. For example, reinforce doors and windows with multi-point locks or install programmable exterior lights to simulate a presence. Taking care to notify your neighbors of your absences, or even avoiding publishing your movements on social networks, also helps to reduce the risks. These precautions, combined with the presence of a guard dog, can greatly limit the chances of burglary.
