The idea has something to scare. An arachnologist explains to us.
Fall is the reproduction season for spiders. This is the reason why they are often more visible during this period. However, there are all year round in mainland France. “Summer and autumn spiders are often larger, that is why they are noticed more. We have more than 500 species which measure less than 2 mm, that’s why people do not see them or do not pay attention”informs us Anne Bounias-Delacour, arachnologist.
Seeing a spider in the house is always synonymous with fear. Fear that she wanders on our skin, bite us … and lay her eggs. The spiders bite with two venom hooks located on their cherries (two organs located at the front of the spider under the eyes which consist of a basal article and a venom hook). A spider bite is thus characterized by two small points spaced under 2 millimeters. Redness, swelling and edema can occur. “Be careful however, some insects can sting several times and it may be wrong with a spider bite”warns the specialist.
As for the fact that she can lay her eggs under the skin, it is not possible because spiders, when they lay, surround their eggs with a silk cocoon. “Consequently, they cannot physically move under our skin, especially since their silk could not come out of the sectors” explains the specialist. The only animals that have the capacity to lay under the skin have an ovipositor, an organ in the shape of a tube located at the end of their abdomen which allows the eggs to be placed in the place where they will hatch. “In Arachnids, some mites can lay under human skin and therefore people think that they are spiders, but cases are extremely rare, it has never happened in France” continues the arachnologist.
Overall, spiders are very rare, because they only bite to eat, generally prey of their size, or to defend themselves, for example when a garment is put in which a spider is located. “In addition, the venom being precious for the spider, the majority of bites are white bites, which means that it does not inject venom. Finally, you should know that spiders are not aggressive. If they come to us, it is only to go straight, we are not to their diet. In the world, there are only 7 to 15 deaths related to spiders“Concludes Anne Bounias-Delacour.
