In spite of the negative surveys, the liberal party won the political elections in Canada. The measure of the party’s victory led by Prime Minister Mark Carley is not yet clear, but the reversal of trend with respect to the forecasts is sensational.
Just a few months ago the road to the return to power of the conservatives led by Pierre Poiievre seemed flattened. But Donald Trump’s return to the White House and his unprecedented offensive against Canada, with duties and repeated threats of annexation, have changed the situation. For BBC it was Trump’s attitude that transformed the Canadian political panorama.
“I would like to thank Donald Trump, without which all this would not have been possible,” said Carney after the victory. The voters thus choose continuity by rewarding the same party as Justin Trudeau, who remained in office as Prime Minister for a decade, from 2015 to 2025.
According to the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, the liberals have won or are in the lead in 168 seats of the Chamber of Municipalities, which has 343 seats, and conservatives in 144, putting the Carley party in a dominant position to form at least one minority government.
Carryy has a background more as an economist than a politician and so far he had never held an elective charge. He directed the Canadian Central Bank during the 2008 financial crisis and the Bank of England during Brexit, and mentioned his experience as a preparation to manage the economic turbulence caused by the President of the United States. With this message he managed to conquer the trust of the voters.
Now Carney promises to expand commercial relations with foreign countries to reduce Canada’s dependence on the United States. Speaking to his supporters in Ottawa after the victory in the ballot box, Carryy said that his country will never have to forget the American “betrayal”. “Our old relationship with the United States is over,” he said, because “President Trump is trying to break us to own us”, he said, inviting the country to join the “difficult months to come that will require sacrifices”.
