Of Maria Lucia Tangorra
Fabrizio Moro he is charged because his creation is about to be shared by everyone. From Friday 14 November, only on CD and vinyl (an aspect he cares about a lot), the new album of unreleased songs will be available I’m not afraid of anything. During the press meeting in the offices of the BMG record label, the Roman singer-songwriter expressed his enthusiasm for returning two and a half years after his last project. He has always been characterized by frankness and this time too he does not deny himself: he looks you in the eye, he is at ease in dialogue, indeed, he almost apologizes because if you give him the lead he goes freewheeling.
«I’m not afraid of anything it’s an album into which I put a lot of heart and guts, as always, but compared to previous albums, this one was more ‘suffered’: it was born in a moment in which I felt a general discomfort, I was disappointed by everything that was happening around the Italian musical system and this feeling was more accentuated by the historical period we were living in, the post-pandemic”.
Listening to the nine songs you immediately perceive his character both on a musical level and in content. Fabrizio Moro opens the most intimate drawers, as in Cans (listenable digitally from November 14th https://fabriziomoro.lnk.to/scatole) or Saturday in which he compares the twenty-year-old Fabrizio with the one of today and adds «I am reliving everything through my son who is 17 years old and starts going out alone on Saturdays». And if in My house there is hope, there is no shortage of anger that emerges above all from Superficial And In a world of assholes.
How come you chose I’m not afraid of anything to also title the album?
«In the post-covid era there was the huge question mark about live performances, which for me are a fundamental aspect. Every time I wrote a record I imagined the concert, the reactions that people might have to that particular piece. I’m not afraid of anything it was the song that unlocked my creative process (in mid-2022) and started everything else. When I was ‘blocked’ on a musical level, I started making films, writing two screenplays and directing two films together with Alessio De Leonardis (Ice in 2022 and Tuesday and Friday in 2024). It was a lifeline, a parenthesis that saved me from that static nature of my soul.”
A parenthesis that you plan to reopen?
«I don’t know because cinema has also taken so much energy and time away from music».
Quoting from I’m not afraid of anything: «of dreams defeated by a renegade God.” What are these defeated dreams?
“Different. Every time I set myself a goal, being a fighter I put in a lot of energy and determination and I often failed to reach it. That reference is almost a blasphemy: they are those things you think in certain moments of discouragement. I’ve said it many times: but why are you mad at me? But that’s okay because if everything goes well for you, life becomes boring, doesn’t it?”.
Are you still afraid of something?
«Everything. That I’m not afraid of anything it can be considered more an outburst of the courageous Fabrizio who speaks to the more cowardly Fabrizio. The first tries to emerge when fears materialize. I would consider it more of a slogan that should be repeated every day to give oneself courage. It must not be assumed that that title means I am a superhero, far be it. Then the fears are defeated in certain periods and then return. We always have to deal with things, especially in this society where we are always subject to competitions and goals to achieve. The fact of being constantly judged in life has created instability in me, it is the price you pay for living the life you like to live.”
In a world of str..i you sing: «WhyAnd now we are sad, left in the hands of analysts” and you add «Dear God, how sad we are without Battisti’s songs.” Could you elaborate?
«That song is a bit of a provocation because I made this reflection: when you perceive that there were many assholes around you, it means that you are the first. Inner frustration or anger are all feelings that become negative if you fail to channel them well. Instead, when you are calm with yourself, you understand and perceive that in reality there are fewer assholes than you think.”
In some songs (see Take the air away from me) tell various faces of love. What is Fabrizio Moro’s greatest love?
«With my children, even more so now that they are teenagers, I have a different relationship with them compared to when they were little. They allowed me to find an inner stability that I didn’t have before. I have been separated for a long time and they spent the first phase of their childhood with their mother, they saw me very little. I have always lived with a burden on my conscience that I was not able to provide a complete family. Now most of the time I’m at home I spend with them and it’s a love that is strengthened through the experiences we share.”
Which dad are you?
«Very rigid, I don’t believe in friendship between father and son because I believe a certain distance must be maintained which then gives credibility to what the parent says. I am for transparency, even reporting mistakes. I’ll give you an example. My son doesn’t have a driving license yet, I told him: do you want to go in the car with your drunk friend? I can’t control you, go with the drunk friend, but know that there can be this consequence because a drunk friend of mine died while driving. You choose, I tell you what can happen based on my experience. I have always tried to make them responsible.”
The tracklist ends with Cans written during the‘last move. What is the box that must never be missing?
«My historical records that I grew up with. On everyone Appetite for Destruction by Guns N’ Roses. It’s the album that changed my life, I listened to it for the first time when I was 12, I still have the original cover (it was censored). And again Nevermind of Nirvana and The Joshua Tree of U2 all original. I’ve carried them with me for forty years, it’s a piece of history that I will leave to my children.”
