A return with fanfare for this star dress.
She has strutted on the latest red carpets of the most high-profile events on the celebrity planet. We have seen it on stars of all ages, of all nationalities, of diverse and varied styles. A key piece of royalty’s wardrobe, it is regularly worn by Kate Middleton, Mathilde of Belgium and many other personalities. Logical when you know your past…
Indeed, after having protected our neighbors in the Roman Empire from the cold, then the commoners of the medieval era, royal figures took possession of it, giving it all its aura of glory. French monarchs willingly wear it during their coronation, in a luxurious velvet version called the “chappe”. In the 1920s, it escaped from this courtly imaginary world and took to the streets, settling neither seen nor known on the shoulders of individuals from wealthy classes. It is particularly with elaborate ball gowns that it is once associated. You will have understood, it is the cape.
At the time, it was its coat and/or overcoat version that appealed. Today, it is reinvented in a chic dress version. More than a piece of outdoor clothing, it fits almost directly into said dresses. It is now impossible to distinguish the cape from the rest of the clothing; they merge, become one. A very clever fashion communion.
Last October 18, on the red carpet of the Rome film festival, Angelina Jolie served us a very sophisticated cape dress. In a reinvented little black dress, with marked shoulder pads and an uninhibited backless, the cape sheds its theatrical length, is deconstructed, but remains in the style of the sleeves put on by the actress.
In the 5th edition of Annual Academy Museum GalaKaia Gerber, for her part, preferred a signed version Givenchyimmaculate in lace, with a cape that looked like a long train. Glamorous as can be, this reinvented dress is the perfect piece for the end-of-year celebrations. An elegant and stylish option to add to our shortlist of party looks!
