Alert on the outbreak of gas prices. “Between January 2016 and September 2025, French consumers have indeed seen the amount of their gas bill are multiplied by two”explains the comparator of energy suppliers Selectra, in a study published on September 17. More precisely, the average note of the 11.2 million gas heated households increased from 747 to 1,511 euros over just under 10 years. Why such an explosion? Due to the evolution of the price, of course. The cost of the “molecule”, which weighs for 44% of the bill, jumped 134% over this period, from 284 to 665 euros, under the effect of the war in Ukraine mainly. “The conflict has dropped imports of Russian gas, the cheapest on the market”underlines Maxime de la Raudière, deputy managing director of Selectra, questioned by Capital.
Another explanation lies in taxation, which counts for 29% of the painful and made a painful catch -up after the lifting of the price shield at the end of 2023. “The excise on gas almost doubled on January 1, 2024, going from 8.37 euros to 16.37 euros per megawatt hour (MWh)”points the study. Result: in 10 years, its weight has been multiplied by more than 2.5. Finally, the cost of the network (27% of the invoice) is not to be outdone: it is more expensive each year (+35% since July 2024) and customers must assume it. “These delivery costs are incompressible and there are fewer and fewer customers. The number of gas subscribers has dropped by 4% in 5 years between 2020 and 2025, 430,000 out of a total of 11.2 million today ”notes Maxime de la Raudière.
A vicious circle for gas prices
Gas prices, taxation, transport cost. A very bitter cocktail for gas subscribers … who will unfortunately have to get used to it. Because the increases in the routing cost will weigh a little more for customers each year. The trend being “Electrification of uses”underlines the deputy director general of the energy supplier comparator, the number of gas heated to gas should further be reduced when energy transport costs will make the opposite path. Result: a price that will still climb.
And taxation shouldn’t make sure. “Electricity is much more taxed than gas. The excise on gas is currently 16.37 euros per megawatt hour (MWH), against 30 euros for electricity. I do not see a government reducing these taxes. On the other hand, raising them for gas – as was the case for electricity in February 2024 then February 2025 – is a fairly simple and not too unpopular way to recover money for the State “anticipates the expert. According to its calculations, for a type home that consumes 11 MWh of gas per year, increase the excise on gas up to the electricity would increase the bill by 10%, or even more, from 150 to 200 euros (including VAT) per year on a current total of 1,511 euros. A flambé that will certainly do not led to the gas course on the wholesale markets, the Russian imports having to be cut by 2027 in the European Union. The same Europe that is committed to buying more gas, including liquefied natural gas (LNG), in the United States as part of the trade agreements signed this summer. A much more expensive commodity than Russian gas …
