«Among the many memories that are intertwined at this moment, one in particular seems to me to deliver the correct image of the national dimension of Monsignor Cesare Nosiglia “. When we reach Alberto Chiarajournalist and writer already chief editor of Christian family In the “his-them” Turin, a few hours after the disappearance of the emeritus archbishop who has many times had the grace to meet, he is moved; The thought runs to a decisive moment of his magisterium. «Autumn 2015, on the eve of the fifth ecclesial conference of the Italian Church on the topic In Jesus Christ the new humanism which would take place from 9 to 13 November of that year, in Florence, the Archbishop of Turin during a long hearing, He reasoned about the ways to say God today, in an increasingly fragmented, scenicized, selfish and insensitive society like the Italian oneand he manifested my alleged desire to offer everyone, without exclusion, the ultimate meaning of the birth, of life, of suffering, of dying that for him, for us, derives from faith and writing. Nosiglia was the president of the preparatory committee of the Florence conference; He held an articulated report in that assembly. Rixment like his analyzes “on leaving”, “on announcing”, “on the living”, “on Educare”, “on transfiguring” were daughters (also) of that of mine of mine and of many other opportunities for comparison that he had sought and lived. In short, he showed that he was a man of listening and dialogue. As we know, Florence was one of the turning points of the Catholic Church path in Italy ».

The biography
Monsignor Cesare Nosiglia was born in Rossiglione (5 October 1944), province of Genoa and diocese of Acqui Terme, was formed in the seminars of Acqui Terme and Rivoli. Priest from 29 June 1968, continues his studies of theology and sacred Scripture in Rome (Pontifical Lateran University and Biblical Institute). From 1971 to 1991 he was deputy director and then director of the National Catechetical Office of the Italian Episcopal Conference.
On September 14, 1991, appointed by John Paul IIis consecrated bishop by Cardinal Camillo Ruini. He is auxiliary and then deputyheregent of the diocese of Rome (appointed Archbishop Ad personam in 1996). In recent years it has been engaged above all in the sectors of young people, education and the Catholic school. In 2000 he is at the top of the committee that organizes the large gathering for the young man in Tor Vergata. But it is also very attentive to the difficult conditions of the marginalized, in particular the homeless and nomads.
In 2003 he was transferred to the diocese of Vicenza, where he continued his commitment with the youth world and for solidarity. Benedict XVI appoints him Archbishop of Turin, where he will enter November 21, 2010.
The strong sensitivity to the social issues, gained since she is a boy, leads him to take demanding public positions in the numerous crisis areas that characterize the events of Turin and Piedmont in the years of the “long farewell” of Fiat. To this “magisterium of the street” Monsignor Nosiglia accompanies a strong attention to young people and the realities of the territory: in the years of his episcopate he will visit all the communities of the diocese twice, also meeting realities that are not part of the “Catholic world” in the strict sense.
It is his image of the “two cities”: The Turin of the wealthy and guaranteed and that, silent and increasingly numerous, of the fragile and marginalized.
To a particular world of “distant”, often looked at with distrust and poor sympathy, Msgr. Nosiglia has always paid a lot of attention, up to them (2012) a pastoral letter, “not foreigners but fellow citizens and family members of God”: they are the nomads, in their various ethnic groups, which Nosiglia had known and frequented since the Roman years.
Another strong field of commitment is the Shroud. The Archbishop promotes (2013) the first ostentation dedicated in a special way to the sick and people in suffering. In the following years there will be other ostensions that will protagonists young people, for their extraordinary Jubilee and then for the European meeting of the communities of Taizé, in the troubled time of Covid (in spring 2020, Nosiglia promotes an extraordinary ostentation in the presence of the civil authorities of Turin and Piedmont, as a common moment of prayer in the time of contact).
However, it is with the public and general ostention of 2015 that the Shroud is connected to a pastoral action that involves everyone, with a visit of two days of Pope Francis to Turin. Bergoglio, after the silent greeting to the Shroud in the Duomo, will go to the places from which his ancestors had left for Argentina, and will meet the young people in Valdocco and then in the great Eucharistic celebration in Piazza Vittorio.
Young people, world of work, Shroud – and, always, great attention to people’s problems: These are the lines of continuity along which the magisterium of Nosiglia moves as of his successor. With, again, an “obliged” attention to the theme of the rethinking of the presence of the Church in the area (merger of parishes, reorganization of services, reference to the co -responsibility of all the members of the ecclesial community).
