Are you looking to save money by turning down the heating? Be careful not to go below this temperature threshold.
With the increasing cost of energy, saving on heating is a priority, especially if you have electric radiators. We know that lowering the temperature by one degree in the house represents 7% savings on the bill, so yes, it is worth the cost to play with the thermostats according to your needs. And to lower the bill, we are often tempted to turn off the heating in rooms we don’t use. We then position the radiator on the frost protection function thinking that everything will go well, except that it is not at all sufficient. It is absolutely necessary to ensure that a certain temperature is maintained, even in rooms not in use, because the consequences can be disastrous.
What exactly happens when a room isn’t heated enough? Too low a temperature encourages condensation on walls and windows. You can almost be sure that mold and black spots will appear. With humidity, the materials in the room will degrade over time and this can result in significant costs. Wood can crack and paint can even peel. Electrical appliances, if exposed to excessive humidity, can also be damaged. To keep the room healthy, it is therefore advisable to maintain a temperature around 15 degrees and not to drop below 12 degrees. The savings on the bill will be significant, without this being a problem.
You should also keep in mind that a very cold room in the house will also create a thermal bridge with other rooms. You could therefore lose out on savings if you have to turn up the heating in the house to compensate for the cold coming from the unheated room. Finally, you should know that a very cold room requires more energy to be heated when you decide to return it to a normal temperature, which can ultimately increase energy consumption. It is therefore better to turn the heating on very low, but leave it on all the same.
