When a child is full of emotions and is overexcited, here is an effective method that does not require any specific equipment.
Faced with emotional storms and moments of overexcitement, there is a gentle method that requires no accessories. All parents know those moments when the pressure skyrockets in a matter of seconds. We sometimes feel helpless when the hustle and bustle gets out of control and it is impossible to bring calm back home. However, a simple little ritual can change everything.
Excitement is often a wave that overwhelms the child: his little engine revs up, his breathing accelerates, and he loses track. He doesn’t do it on purpose: he is simply overwhelmed by his sensations and can no longer press “pause” on his own. This is where the breath becomes magical: by calming it, we calm everything else. It’s a real superpower that children always have with them, they still need to be taught how to use it. Specialists advise that this gesture be practiced regularly, and not only “when it overflows“, so that the body adopts it naturally.
For this to become natural, the ideal is to turn it into a habit, like a little game, and not just wait for the crisis to try. The trick is very simple: the child places his hand on his stomach, inhales through his nose while inflating the “balloon”, then exhales gently through his mouth, as if he were blowing through a straw, for as long as possible. Three or four times are often enough to relieve the pressure.
This little moment helps the child understand that he can regain control of himself. By slowing his breathing, he feels reassured and safe. It’s a golden tip, very useful also for those most stressed by school, which saves many difficult evenings. Parents can establish it as a moment of bonding, in a quiet evening or after an argument, without it seeming like a punishment or an imposed exercise.
