Immigration has been a major topic in Italian summer news for a decade. But this August 2024 is an exception. This year, migrant arrivals on the peninsula’s coasts have fallen by 60%, with some 27,000 people disembarking, compared to 71,000 in the same period in 2023, according to figures from the Interior Ministry.
The public debate is thus less about the fear of an uncontrollable migration crisis with the massive influx of illegal migrants, than about the opportunities that the integration of foreigners living there, or the arrival of regular foreign workers, could offer Italy.
