– The average tax catch-up reaches more than 2,000 euros on average for the 9.8 million individuals concerned in 2024.
An unwelcome end-of-month expense for nearly 10 million French people. This Thursday, September 26, the tax authorities will carry out a withdrawal from bank account of 9.8 million tax households. The reason for this drain is simple: following your tax return completed last spring, the tax administration calculated your final tax on your income collected in 2023. And if the total withholding taxes (PAS) on your salaries or your retirement pensions received in 2023 – for example if they increased last year and the rate of your PAS has not been updated day – is less than this amount, you owe money to the taxman. Same consequence if you benefited from a credit advance or tax reduction that was too high at the start of the year: you have a tax debt, hence the catch-up which begins Thursday.
Beware of rejection fees and tax increases
And the amount of the pain is anything but anecdotal since, on average, debtors will have to repay 2,127 euros in taxes. A sum which will be taken in one go, on September 26, if it does not exceed 300 euros. On the other hand, if the bill is higherthree other samples will follow: October 25, November 25 and December 27. In this case, the debits from your bank account will be identical, for example 500 euros for a total catch-up of 2,000 euros. If you are concerned, you can find your schedule on page 1 (under the heading “Amount remaining to pay”) of your 2024 tax notice on 2023 income posted online on the impots.gouv website. fr, in the “Documents” section, in your particular space.
It is therefore up to you to sufficiently fund your bank account. Because if the debit made in the name of the General Directorate of Public Finances (DGFiP) is rejected, you will suffer a double penalty. First of all fees charged by your bankof a maximum of 20 euros per refused transaction. Then, from the tax authorities, in the form of a 10% increase of the tax due, or 50 euros if the amount you must pay to the tax authorities this September 26 is 500 euros.
