– Nearly 10 million taxpayers owe an average of 2,127 euros to the tax authorities.
This is the bad news of the summer for nearly 10 million taxpayers. The tax authorities are putting online, starting this Friday, July 26, the final tax notices of households that will have a remaining tax to pay this fall. And many of them will not have paid enough tax in 2023: 9.8 million of tax households will in fact have to repay on average 2,127 eurosaccording to figures from the General Directorate of Public Finances (DGFIP) communicated to Capital. Enough to weigh down your budget if you have not anticipated this regularization.
But don’t worry: as soon as you owe more than 300 euros to the tax authoritiesit is possible to pay in several installments what you owe to the tax authorities. And this, without any specific action on your part. In principle, the tax authorities specify on the first page of your 2024 tax notice on 2023 income the amount you still have to pay. Below, you will find a schedule dividing the total amount into four payments. If your bank details are up to date on your personal online space, the tax authorities will directly debit the amounts from your account September 26, October 25, November 25 and December 27.
Your withholding tax will soon be adjusted
There are several reasons why you have to pay a tax balance to the tax authorities. Your family situation may have changed during 2023 without you having notified the tax authorities. This happens if your adult child has left the family home, works on a permanent contract and declares their income themselves. Another possible reason: you no longer benefit from a tax credit because you no longer need a childminder to look after your young children who are now in school. Or you may have obtained a promotion or changed jobs with better pay without adjusting your withholding tax rate last year.
Income tax: more than 900 euros reimbursed on average to 16 million taxpayers
Every month, the tax authorities collect your income tax using a rate deducted from your salary or retirement pension. Calculated to correspond as closely as possible to your resources, it can prevent you from having to pay too much tax after your tax return. The problem is that this rate only corresponds to your situation at a “time T” in your life. In other words, if your income increases in the meantime and you do not inform the tax authorities, then you will certainly have a balance of tax to pay to the tax authorities.
By the way, if you owe money to the tax authorities, it is likely that the tax authorities have indicated a new withholding tax rate in your tax notice. Without any action on your part in your personal online space, this will apply from September: so do not be surprised if the amount of your net salary after income tax is lower.
