A few years ago, it was valid for life, but since 2013, it must be renewed every 15 years.
When we talk about administrative procedures, in general, many people turn a deaf ear. However, these are essential to access certain aid, services or obtain certain official documents. Precisely, there is a document that millions of French people have and which today needs to be replaced. Previously, it was valid for life, but since 2013 it must be changed every 15 years. This is due to a measure adopted by all member states of the European Union. If you follow the news, you must have certainly heard about the fact that the famous pink license is seeing its last hours.
All motorists will have to replace their driving license with the “credit card” format (“id1” format), which has been issued to all new drivers since 2013. The deadline to do this is set at 2033. So yes, that seems far away, however, it is strongly recommended to take steps to change it now. To do this, simply make the request online on the ANTS (National Agency for Secure Titles) website. The process is free, except for the costs for the identity photo. You must provide your license to be replaced, proof of address, proof of identity and a digital photo signature.
Why is it better not to wait? If you wait until the last moment, there is a good chance that the prefecture services will be saturated with requests, that waiting times will lengthen, and above all, you risk being illegal. In fact, from 2033, your “pink” license will no longer be valid in the event of a road check. You will therefore be in violation. The fine incurred for failure to present a driving license is generally set at 11 euros, but can be increased to 33 euros. Then, if you do not present your document within 5 days to a gendarmerie or police station, the fine is higher, it can go up to 750 euros, indicates the Public Service website.
From now on, “the driving license with category A or B is valid for 15 years. Its renewal is an administrative process, without medical or driving examination. It allows you to update your postal address, as well as your photo”, can we read on the France Titles website. On the other hand, for category C or D professional licenses (heavy goods vehicles, public transport), the validity is shorter, 5 years, and is subject to regular medical checks.
