Eye shadow is a real ally for our makeup. It adds dimension, accentuates eye color and can even bring a touch of fantasy to our makeup! But you still have to choose it carefully. It’s no secret: as time passes, the face has to face some changes and the look is unfortunately no exception. In fact, the skin of the eyelids becomes thinner and some folds appear. This phenomenon is natural but you should adapt your makeup so that it lasts all day. The first step? An eye contour to moisturize the area. We then add a base to the eyelids which extends the life of the shadows. “It will hook the materials and prevent them from moving or slipping into the folds.“, explains Mathieu Grandjean Makeup Artist and Trainer at Nars. Good preparation is therefore essential.
Then comes the moment of makeup itself. Here again, it is important to choose a suitable product. Forgotten makeup that is quite heavy and difficult to work with, which can dry out the skin. We favor lightness with “cream textures or fairly fine powder pigments“, continues the expert. For example, Nars offers the Total Seduction stick shadow. Easy to apply, it is very creamy and fades quickly. The key? Work in thin layers, but also and above all gradually. “What I advise for more mature eyes is not to put the color directly on the skin. We will take from the stick with a brush and work little by little until the desired intensity is obtained. This will avoid putting too much material“, assures Mathieu Grandjean. Same instructions with powder eyeshadows with which we take care to remove the excess product on the brush.
As for colors, neutral tones like beige, taupe, light brown or old pink will be perfect for brightening the eyes. On the other hand, the makeup artist wants to send a message: “There is this myth of thinking that you can no longer wear glitter or iridescent things after a certain age. But for example, drag queens wear a lot of glitter because it reflects light.“So, he advises not to permanently ban them from our beauty shelves. On the contrary, pearly shadows blend easily and smooth the eyelid. They can be placed in the inner corner of the eye to add a touch of luminosity!
Even if makeup does not obey any strict rules, which is what makes it so charming, Mathieu Grandjean advises women aged 50 and over to use two shadows to highlight the eyes. “What works very well is to apply a neutral, fairly light shadow all over the eyelid, stretching it outwards, then add a darker shade — or even two — along the lash line..” Placed there, the shadow can act as eyeliner, a product that is sometimes difficult to master, especially when you have drooping eyelids. A slight smoky effect along the eye then adds a more mysterious touch. “I really think that the more mature we become, the sexier our look becomes“, concludes the makeup artist.
