Many suffer with Israel for the barbaric killings (also of infants) of 7 October and for the murdered hostages, or returned home after time or used as blackmail. Killing, as Hamas did on October 7th, expresses the will to annihilate a people. But many today say enough to the massacre that Gaza and his people are hit, starting from the children. The many innocent deaths are inexplicable and inhuman: they dig an abyss. The soul of the Middle East is sick of bipolarism of hatred that overwhelms every sense of humanity. Revenge is a vertigo that brings far away. Hamas is an ideological monster that has performed unspeakable acts. But human lives cannot be sacrificed in an apocalyptic war. Many in Israel are aware of it. They feel that the retaliation takes everyone on a outfit.
There is a fact neglected by too many: among the Palestinians, tired of being hostages, there are those who want to get rid of Hamas. They are not few, even if they cannot speak. In the Gaza strip the population is 70% of refugees: for decades a huge refugee camp, in which the memory of the Nakba prevailed, the “catastrophe” of 1948. Here the terrorism of Hamas manipulated “The dream of return”. Sacrificing the civilians and children of their Palestinian people, hiding behind them, is a crime. A lot of barbarism strengthens in Netanyahu the belief that anyone who lives in Gaza is an accomplice and therefore sacrificable. This is not the case. For international law there are no collective punishments. The war in Gaza is apocalyptic: without end, hope and purpose. The retaliation without limits paradoxically nourishes the culture of the martyrdom of the enemies of Israel. Anti -Semitism reappears in Europe and America: you have to stem it!
Divide into opposite fans, perhaps making the ranking of pain, does not exceed hatred. Martin Buber wrote: “The world is not always understandable but it is embraceable”. Pietas is needed to look at the crisis with humanity and admit that for decades Gaza herself has not been embraced, put on the agenda, but forgotten and hidden behind many opposing interests. This has favored all kinds extremisms. Now he urgently needs to “embrace” all this painful story, so as not to leave the protagonists more alone, taken in the Gorgo dell’Odio that pushes them towards horizons without visions.
The perspective of the two states is the only realistic outlet. Today it seems impossible: the policy of the colonists in the West Bank confirms this, which has as its reaction the growth of the liking of the Palestinians of the region towards Hamas. But what alternative is there? Hunt the Palestinians or endless war? Neither of the two peoples can imagine that the other disappears or goes away, it is not known where (“from the river to the sea” say the extremists of the two sides). Building coexistence after so much horror is tiring: impossible for some. But what other possibility? Transforming the enemy into close is a process that needs time, guarantees, vision, friendships. The real enemy is the war, which never ends and makes monsters men. Today Israel and Palestine need their friends to act not as fans, but as companions for the return of peace. This is why it takes a truce, which calms the spirits, save human lives and allows assistance to a exhausted Gaza.
