Nour after the operation.
“Let’s save the life of Nour and the last limb that has remained to her.” It is the desperate appeal of the lawyer Matteo Cecconi Bettarini, of the Florence forum, to the Italian authorities. A cry that comes from Gaza, where the two children, Nour and Yahya, who survived an Israeli bombing that killed their little brother and seriously injured them, lie in desperate conditions in a field hospital with no borders Belgium, in Deir at Balah.
The story of Nour
Nour was born on December 28, 2015. She was just nine years old when an explosion overwhelmed it. The doctors were forced to amputate both legs and right hand. Now, even the only remaining limb risks being amputated. Healthcare personnel does everything possible to avoid it, but Gaza lack adequate structures and specialists capable of carrying out an advanced reconstructive intervention. Nour also suffers from serious depression and chronic pain, which do not find relief due to the lack of drugs, including basic analgesics.
The story of Yahya
Little Yahya, Nour’s brother, was born on August 14, 2022. He is only three years old. He was injured in the same bombing that torn a little brother on them. Yahya reported an exposed fracture of the distal femur, a serious injury to the knee and a crushing of the left foot. The fracture was stabilized with an external fixer, but the child urgently needs an advanced orthoplastic intervention and further clinical investigations. Also for him, in Gaza, there are no possibility of receiving adequate care.
A race against time
The two children have been hospitalized for weeks in precarious conditions, in an area devastated by the war, where survival itself is more uncertain every day. “The extremely critical situation in the Gaza strip does not leave any prospect of the future to children – reads the appeal -. The continuation of these conditions inevitably condemns them to certain death ». According to the UN report published in March 2025, Israel is carrying out acts of genocide in the Gaza Strip, systematically affecting hospitals and health structures and imposing a siege that blocks the aid, including the indispensable drugs to relieve the sufferings of the little ones.
The appeal to Italy
The lawyer Bettarini asks the Italian authorities to intervene immediately to guarantee Nour and Yahya a humanitarian corridor and the transfer to hospital facilities capable of ensuring them the necessary care. “It is a matter of life or death – he underlines -. Every day that passes increases the risk of irreversible amputations and fatal complications ».
The voice of the parents
The parents, Mahmoud to Farag and Rabab Sa Abchuhanima, also injured in the attack, live in Deir at Balah. Their only desire is to see the cured and safe children. But on their own they can do nothing: political decisions, humanitarian corridors, immediate care are needed.
The story of the Florentine lawyers
“I met Nour through the network – says the lawyer Bettarini, who is flanked by colleagues Silvia Giannini and Francesca Bevilacqua – and from that moment I decided to do everything in my possibilities to save her together with her only little brother who survived the bombing of their tent. I discovered it through the Instagram publications of a young journalist from Gaza, Amr Tabash. With my colleagues we are trying to do the same for other little ones in similar conditions. Saving the life of these children touches me deeply, as a person and as a father. I do not see anything different in Nour, nothing less than my daughter, if not the misfortune of being born among the weak and the last, in the land of Jesus. The main reason for which we beat for them is in an image: when I saw the photo of Nour, tormented on a stretcher with a single limb remained and the gaze now far from pain, in that body I saw Christ, I saw Jesus on the cross.
