Save the Children expresses strong concern for the situation of the more than 4,200 minors living in the Niscemi area, where the recent and intense rains have caused new landslides and a progressive worsening of the hydrogeological instability. Further rainfall expected in the coming days could further worsen the emergency.
Families are experiencing moments of great fear and uncertainty, with particularly serious repercussions on boys and girls, declares the Organization which has been fighting for over 100 years to save girls and boys at risk and guarantee them a future. Many minors, in addition to the fear, are facing the trauma of being evacuated from their homes and having their classes suspended due to the closure of several schools. Entire neighborhoods have already been evicted and the situation remains highly unstable.
In this context it is essential to guarantee protection, assistance and immediate responses to the youngest. No child should have to face an emergency of this magnitude alone. Save the Children is constantly monitoring the evolution of events in Niscemi and will be present in the area tomorrow with its own team to evaluate a possible targeted intervention, concludes the Organization.
