October is the month of global mobilization against breast cancer. Naturally, the AIRC Foundation is a member of the association, which unites researchers, patients and supporters with the aim of finding safe and effective treatments even for women affected by the most aggressive forms. The symbol of the campaign is the incomplete pink ribbon, like the objective that has not yet been fully achievedBreast cancer is the most frequent cancer among women: every year in Italy over 55,000 diagnoses are recorded, one in eight women becomes ill during her lifetime. Thanks to research, today around 88% of them are alive five years after diagnosis. However, the challenge is still open for the approximately 12% of patients affected by the most aggressive forms, for whom treatments are not yet effective enough. This is why the AIRC pink ribbon is different from the others: it is incomplete, like the objective which has not yet been fully achieved. Among the many stories with a happy ending is that of Benedetta, who was 25 years old when she received the diagnosis of breast cancer. in 2020, and today mother of Sole and Noa. «I have always supported research and the year before my diagnosis I had also posed for a calendar on prevention for women. I would never have imagined that the following year I myself would find myself facing breast cancer at just 25 years old.” Benedetta recalls: «The diagnosis was a shock, I went from feeling well to setting the date for the operation. In 2020, in the midst of Covid, I underwent surgery: they removed everything, not even my nipple was saved. The year following the operation was the worst of my life: I felt anger and no stimulus, emptiness, I had to work on myself to metabolize the operation.” Then, in 2021, the rebirth: «I met Marco. He was my salvation, he arrived in my darkest period, he went beyond my fears, my illness and my limits. In a very short time we built a wonderful family with our two little girls. My daughter Sole’s name contains everything: mine, our rebirth, seeing the light again, starting to live again.”
AIRC’S COMMITMENT AGAINST BREAST CANCER: 14 MILLION EUROS IN 2024 ALONE
To make all breast cancers increasingly treatable, the AIRC Foundation has allocated over 14 million euros to research projects and scholarships in this area in 2024 alone.
The AIRC Foundation’s Pink Ribbon invites us to face together the big step that separates us from the finish line: treating all women. A goal that seems close, but the last mile is always the hardest to travel and requires an even greater commitment from researchers because it is precisely here that the most difficult challenges are faced, such as triple negative breast cancer, which responds only in part of the treatments currently available and mainly strikes at a young age. Another unresolved problem is metastatic breast cancer, which today affects around 37,000 women in Italy (the data comes from the report. Among the projects underway in the laboratories of institutes, hospitals and universities throughout Italy is that of Maria Vittoria Dieci, doctor oncologist and AIRC researcher at the University of Padua: «Finding more precise and targeted treatments for breast cancer is the focus of my research activities, in particular the AIRC project – which I carry out my group – tries to define some parameters linked to the immune system and metabolism, capable of improving the selection of patients who will benefit from treatments with immunotherapy drugs in the case of triple-negative breast cancer”.
Over the last forty years, research has led to extraordinary progress in the treatment of breast cancer: increasingly conservative and respectful surgical interventions for the woman’s body, less toxic and shorter radiotherapy treatments, more precise and targeted therapies. The progress was made possible thanks also to the support of donors and the many companies that mobilize every October. First of all The Estée Lauder Companies Italia, which for ten years has chosen the AIRC Foundation as charity partner of the “Breast Cancer Campaign”. Created in 1992 by Evelyn H. Lauder, together with the pink ribbon symbol, the international campaign has involved more than 60 countries for over thirty years, raises awareness of the importance of prevention and raises funds for research.
