A total of 353 billion euros! This is the amount paid in 2022 to all retirees by French schemes, according to figures published by the Directorate of Research, Studies, Evaluation and Statistics (Drees), this Wednesday, October 30. A jackpot distributed between 17.9 million peopleof whom 17 million received a “direct right” pension (in return for their contributions), and 4.4 million received a survivor’s pensionpaid after the death of their spouse.
How much do these retirees or survivors’ pension recipients receive precisely? According to the Drees, the average amount of pensions stood in 2022 at 1,786 euros gross per month, or 1,662 euros after social security contributions (CSGCRDS and Casa). A sum which therefore includes the two types of pension – “direct law” (retirement) and “derivative law” (survivor’s pension). More representative, the average amount of direct pensions, those received by 17 million people, is displayed at 1,626 euros grossor 1,512 euros net of social security contributions.

But as always when it comes to averages, very strong disparities can be noted. And first of all between women and men. “In 2022, the average gross direct pension of retired women residing in France (including any increase for three or more children) amounts to 1,268 euros per month, compared to 2,050 euros for men. The average pension for women is therefore 38% lower to that of men”report the authors of the study. A sizeable gap, but one which is reducing considerably – it peaked at 50% in 2004 – under the effect of the increase in the activity rate of women and their salaries. Note that the latter are the main beneficiaries of survivor’s pensions since 32% of women directly entitled to pensions receive them, compared to 6% of men. This pension taken into account, the gap between the two genders therefore closes slightly to fall to 26%. “Even in this case, however, the average monthly pension of women (1,539 euros) remains significantly lower than that of men (2,077 euros)”nuance Drees.

6,500 euros average pension for the 1% of best-served retirees
Women being the least well served by pension schemes, 49% of them receive a direct pension of less than 1,000 euros gross, compared to 15% of men. Thus, more than one in three retirees (34%) residing in France do not reach this symbolic threshold. Proof of the considerable gaps in retirement, 8% of pensioners receive more than 3,000 euros gross per month (3% of women and 14% of men). And 1% of retirees benefit from a gross pension greater than 5,150 euros per monthWho amounts to 6,470 euros on average. That is four times more than the average pension received by a retiree. These best served public are mainly found in Ile-de-France, where the amount of pensions explodes the national average. Thus, it exceeds it by 39% in Paris, by 36% in Hauts-de-Seine or even by 35% in Yvelines and by 22% in Essonne. “On the other hand, it is lower than the national average in the north and north-east of France, as well as in the Massif Central and in the overseas departments and regions (DROM)”point out the authors of the report.
