Want to fix your split ends without resorting to scissors? But is it really possible? An expert answers.
Over time, your hair can start to look like a damaged rope, especially at the ends. While this is normal, it can make your hair look less pretty and, above all, it is an indicator that something is missing from your hair routine. Indeed, between heat-based appliances, lack of care, or repeated coloring, your mane is often put to the test.Using very hot appliances too often, and drying your hair can seriously damage it. Especially – but not only – if your hair has been sensitized by coloring and/or bleaching“, professional colourist Michele Antiga tells Glamour UK. Damage can also occur through brushing, using hair ties or pulling your hair too tightly. So when you start to notice that your hair is looking tired, perhaps rougher to the touch, it’s time to take action. But can you really fix split ends?
We often hear that it is necessary to do treatments (mask, serum, etc.) in order to restore damaged hair. Unfortunately, once the ends are split, it is no longer possible to reverse the trend. You can only cut them to make sure the damage doesn’t extend further up the hair length.“, continues Michele Antiga. The scissors are therefore inevitable to restore healthy hair and prevent it from becoming too brittle. On the other hand, it is possible to adopt good habits to prevent split ends.
The first of these? Avoid exposing your hair too often to high-heat appliances (straighteners, hair dryers, etc.). These should not be set above 180°C, as they can cause irreversible damage to the keratin. Before using them, don’t hesitate to apply a heat-protective spray to the entire length. When you shampoo, use treatments such as masks or pre-shampoos to nourish and strengthen the hair fiber. When you get out of the shower, opt for a microfiber towel that will absorb the water in your hair without damaging it. Finally, when brushing it, use a detangling spray and above all, don’t pull on the lengths, especially if they are wet. The watchword for your mane? Softness. All these good habits should postpone your trip to the hairdresser by a few months.
