Mutant sharks living under the Seine and terrorizing local residents? Some French critics were far from convinced when the film “Under the Seine”, directed by Xavier Gens, was released on June 5 on Netflix. International critics were more enthusiastic, with “The Guardian” hailing “one of the best shark movies ever made”, while “Variety” welcomed the release of “a shark movie finally worthy of ‘Jaws'”.
The public has decided. According to Netflix, “Sous la Seine” has become the first French production to surpass 100 million views on the streaming service. This French shark movie, starring Bérénice Bejo and Nassim Lyes, is now the second most-watched international film on Netflix after “Troll,” a Norwegian science fiction film that had 103 million views during its first 91 days on the platform, compared to 101 million for “Sous la Seine.”
