Vector of diseases, it has become a major nuisance of summer for millions of French people
“When will it stop?”, “Can we no longer eat outside”. Twenty years after his arrival in France, the tiger mosquito continues to proliferate. About 70 departments were colonized in 2024. “At the beginning of 2025, it was 81 out of the 96 metropolitan departments” reports the Ministry of Health. And the few rare to be spared will not stay long. The tiger mosquito loves places inhabited by man. Once installed in a town or department, this insect is practically impossible to get rid of it.
Prevention campaigns have almost become unnecessary for the population who now knows what to do to no longer have tiger mosquitoes. Avoid stagnant waters in your garden, wear loose, long and clear clothes, use repellents on the skin, diffuse lemongrass, burn coffee grounds, install mosquito nets … But you have to face it, despite all these solutions, the Tiger mosquito resists and spoils many summer days. However, there is good news: its activity period is soon over. A date is given.
In a surveillance bulletin, public health France recalls that the period of activity of the tiger mosquito extends “from 1er May to November 30 “. So there are still three months to bear it before being quiet. Indeed, we will be in the fall and the evening of the evenings outdoors will be behind us … However, it will be the moment of the beautiful fall walks, very important for physical and mental health. And doing them without the buzzing of mosquitoes in the ears will be really a pleasure.
Adult tiger mosquitoes are not active in autumn and winter thanks to the drop in temperatures: their development is stopped, but eggs laid earlier survive and remain a threat to the following spring. We must therefore continue to act during the winter break: empty the saucers, gutters … and cover everything that remains outside and could contain stagnant waters with nets, mosquito nets or fabrics (cans, water recovery …). These simple gestures will brake their future proliferation.
