It is not because we never set foot in Buckingham that we cannot enjoy the comfort of his towels. An ex-employee of the palace reveals the method used by the royal house to keep the bathing clothes as soft as on the first day.
Anne Simmons, 57, from Berkshire, worked for years in the service of the palace. She knows every detail of the royal staff linen routine. Interviewed by Plumbworldshe explained how the towels used by the royal family were washed and dried. And against all odds, this protocol does not rely on overpriced products or ultra-sophisticated machines. Just on specific gestures, applied to the letter.
First point on which she insists: the majority of people are completely mistaken thinking that a softener makes the towels more pleasant. In reality, it’s all the opposite. “We think that adding softening makes the towels softer, but it harms their absorption capacity. At the palate, you never use it on towels.” It is said. Forget the colorful liquids with a cotton flower or white musk. They coat the fibers and end up stifling them.
Another error than many make: overdose the laundry. As a result, the fibers get worse, the towels become rough and develop with a seized odors. In Buckingham, we put very little, just enough to wash, no more. Clearly, the only element that the royal house adds at the time of washing is half a cup of white vinegar. It eliminates laundry residues, prevents bad odors and softens the fibers. As Anne Simmons sums it up: “It is a tip transmitted over the years, and it works better than everything you buy in stores.“”
Then, before even thinking about drying, a crucial step is to be observed: “After washing, each towel is vigorously shaken to relax the fibers, which also avoids nodes and allows them to remain soft and airy.” As for the passage to the dryer, no ultra-chaud program or accelerated cycles. The adjustment used at the palate is soft and low. And to boost the result without damaging the material, tennis or wool bullets are added to the drum. They hit the towels, prevent them from agglutinating and promoting a more swollen texture.
A protocol, transmitted from generation to generation, making it possible to preserve the appearance, softness and efficiency of towels. And the best is that everyone can easily apply it.
