Between the packages to be returned and the mail to be sent, many still think that it is necessary to go through a post office. However, a free solution allows you to ship everything from home.
Every year, millions of letters and packages pass through the French postal network. And despite the rise of digital technology, certain procedures still require physical sending. Whether it is an administrative document, a contract to be returned or an item purchased on the internet which is ultimately not suitable, the reflex often remains the same: prepare to send it then find a time to go to a post office. A well-established habit which is however no longer systematically necessary.
For several years, La Poste has offered a system allowing individuals to send certain items directly from their home. Completely free, this service addresses a very concrete problem: avoiding travel for a sometimes time-consuming process. For residents of rural areas, the elderly or simply those who do not want to make a detour between two appointments, the formula is of obvious interest.
The service in question is shipping from your own mailbox. As indicated on the official La Poste website, after registering a collection request, all you have to do is drop off your mail or parcel. The postman then comes to collect it using his master key before sending it to its destination. Once postage has been completed, there is no additional charge for collection. The postman simply takes advantage of his usual tour to collect the shipment.
However, not everyone can benefit from it automatically. In order for the postman to collect the shipment, the mailbox must meet certain standards. It must be a so-called “standardized” mailbox, that is to say it must measure at least 26 centimeters by 26 centimeters by 34 centimeters. The 34 centimeters can correspond to the width, height or depth. Above all, it must be equipped with a system allowing the postman to open it using his professional key. This is what allows him to access his content even when no one is present at home.
For installation at your expense in a detached house, count on around forty euros when purchasing a mailbox from Leroy Merlin or Bricomarché. In recent buildings, standardized mailbox batteries are the rule. In older homes, however, an inspection may be necessary. If necessary, you can request compliance from the co-ownership.
