Solo travel is becoming more and more popular, UN Tourism tells us. Regardless, some places are more conducive to this kind of escapade…
Going on a trip alone allows you to discover yourself more, to visit a place in the way you want, to meet new people or even to become more resourceful! U.S. News has established the list of the best countries to travel solo in 2024, established through a large survey of 17,000 respondents. To obtain this data, several criteria were studied, including the security of the country, its accessibility, the climate and even its leisure activities. In fifth position in this ranking, we find Portugal. There are breathtaking landscapes, relatively welcoming premises, as well as an easily accessible public transport network.
In fourth place is New Zealand, considered one of the safest countries in the world and one of the countries with the most welcoming people. Italy is in third place on this podium, which has several international airports, notably in Milan, Rome, Florence and Naples, which makes travel easier, especially when traveling by plane from Paris. Its public transportation is also very efficient, especially trains.
Greece is almost the top country for solo travel and is in second place. There are many sublime sites to discover both in Athens and in the Cyclades, with a rich culture. You will certainly find many tourists traveling alone there, like you!
So which country has been named the best place for solo travel? It’s Spain! According to UN tourism data, no less than 85 million visitors visited the country last year. If you opt for big cities like Madrid or Barcelona, you will always find something to visit or do. But you can also go to Santiago de Compostela, reconnect with yourself and be inspired by the spirituality of the place.
For those who prefer relaxation and lounging alone on the beach, Spain also has no shortage of resources, whether you choose the Costa Brava, the island of Lanzarote, or Andalusia… Furthermore, you should know that in Spain the cost of living is very affordable with a lunch in a restaurant costing 13 euros on average per person, a pint of beer around 3 euros and accommodation to sleep 18% cheaper compared to France. What’s more, Spain benefits from around 3,000 hours of sunshine per year!
