Forgotten for a while, this legendary shoe finds its place in wardrobes this fall. Elegant and practical, it goes with everything and is already getting people talking.
In mid-October, when the cold slowly sets in and the days get shorter, an irresistible desire takes over us: to stay chic without giving up comfort. We’re bringing out trench coats and coats, but when it comes to shoes, the season has a nice surprise in store.
Because between the appeal of ankle boots and the nostalgia of sandals, there is a desire for something in between: that of a shoe that is light, elegant and comfortable enough to accompany our days without a false note. And as is often the case, it is in French archives that we must look for the right idea. This is where a cult shoe comes into play, born in the 1960s under the leadership of shoe designer Georges Carel. From its launch, it seduced the icons of the time — Brigitte Bardot, Françoise Hardy, Jane Birkin — all of whom fell under the spell of this feminine and practical model, recognizable by its small square heel and its retro silhouette. A shoe that is both wise and impertinent, which has become a symbol of Parisian chic.
You guessed it: it’s about babies. These strappy shoes are back in force this fall 2025, ready to reconquer the streets and the catwalks. Glimpses at the feet of Lily Collins in Emily in Parisby Charlotte Casiraghi or even Letizia from Spain, they are once again establishing themselves as the trendy shoe of the season.
And the good news? The original babies from Carel, a French brand founded in Paris in 1952, are still available. Carefully made in the brand’s European workshops, they cost around 400 euros — a lasting investment for those who dream of an iconic shoe. For more affordable versions, Jonak, Sézane or Minelli revisit the model for around 100 euros. Available in black, red, burgundy or brown, the babies go perfectly with a flowing suit, a midi skirt or straight jeans.
And if the cool weather slows you down, just slip in a pair of socks or opaque tights: a retro twist that we’ve already spotted at Angèle and Louane. Result: a feminine, assertive, slightly mischievous style, which proves that a simple shoe can embody an entire era.
