Several studies have shown that this highly renowned car manufacturer around the world was involved in the greatest number of road accidents.
Investing in a luxury car is the dream of many drivers. Aesthetics, design, comfort, as well as all the high tech options offered represent many advantages to acquire these exceptional models. It must be said that some car manufacturers are betting on more ecological electric models, and driving assistance that seduces: speed regulation, simplified maneuvers … But all these new technologies actually hide a real danger, according to several studies.
Already in 2024, the Iseecars resale site had drawn up a ranking of the most dangerous cars on the road. A model, however, offering advanced technology, records “the highest fatal accident rate among all automotive brands”. And it is the Tesla cars that are pointed out, especially for its autonomous driving system. “These security devices are compromised by steering wheel distraction and high speeds, which leads to an increase in accident rates and mortality in recent years,” said Karl Brauer, analyst at Isecars. According to this study, Tesla recorded a “mortality rate” of 5.6 fatal accidents per billion miles (1.609 km) traveled, twice as much as the average in the United States. Among other dangerous models are also the Kia, Buick, Dodge and Hyundai brands.
Another more recent study, conducted by insurer Lendingtree and published in February 2025, once again confirms this bad ranking. The survey is based on claims requests from insurance during 2024, highlighting the 30 brands that generated the most complaints. Here, it is therefore the drivers (and not the brand itself) that is involved in these accidents. It can be alcohol consumption, speeding, but also vehicle performance. Indeed, American government agencies have concluded that “the mortality rate linked to the Tesla automatic pilot is higher than the estimates,” reports the Forbes magazine.
At the end of 2023, Tesla cars equipped with an automatic driver had been recalled massively, but the brand claims to have solved the problem. However, many cases of accidents (non -deadly) have been listed since. The car would accelerate itself and the driver would not manage to brake.
