It is a great first in Europe. After a test phase, it is in a faster and more ecological way than the packages ordered on the Internet are routed to us.
So far, Amazon packages have been transported in France by truck. On a Paris-Lyon journey for example, it was necessary to have at least eight hours of journey, a rather long means of transport and which is not without consequences on ecology. A new way of transporting parcels ordered online is now less polluting, with “on average 10 times less CO2 per kilometer than a heavyweight, with equal transported mass”, specifies at BFMTV Olivier Pellegrini, Director of Europe – Sustainable Development and packaging for Amazon.
After a test phase, “Packages are now placed in reserved technical spaces, separated from the passenger part “ Explain to TF1 Pierre Algarté, sales manager of TGV suits. Indeed, if you are traveling by train, you will therefore be installed in the same TGV as thousands of pink packages, without it changing the conditions on board. “Amazon and the Rail Logistics Europe (Rle) group, (..) of the SNCF group, announce a first in the European operations of Amazon: the transport of parcels by TGV”, said a press release of May 14.
The packages are positioned at the front and back of the train, at the ends of the train. These spaces have so far been empty, most of the time or little used, except to transport urgent drugs or newspapers. An optimization of the space, but also a time saving for delivery since it now takes only 2h18 for a Paris-Lyon journey (instead of 8 hours).
This partnership between Amazon and SNCF is a first in Europe. Amazon is planning to transport more than 500,000 packages this year, two round trips per day and a thousand parcels per train. This type of high -speed transport should also continue for the year 2025 with more journeys in France. Another objective: to achieve zero carbon net emission by 2040.
