German tennis player Alexander Zverev is causing controversy on and off the court. Little appreciated for his attitude on the courts, he is also criticized because of the serious accusations made against him by his ex-partner.
Alexander Zverev, who began his tennis career in 2011 on the Junior circuit, has become a key figure in the discipline, climbing into the top 10 in the world in the ATP rankings. And if no one can blame him for the quality of his game, the German athlete is on the other hand very divisive. The cause: the serious accusations brought against him.
Alexander Zverev and justice: what was he accused of?
Alexander Zverev was accused in court in 2023 by his ex-partner Brenda Patea – with whom he had a little girl – of domestic violence. She had filed a complaint for facts which allegedly occurred in 2020, during an argument during which she claims to have been pushed by the tennis player against a wall and strangled. As reported by the German site Spiegel.dethe Berlin public prosecutor’s office then referred the case to a district court and requested a criminal injunction against the player.
Alexander Zverev, already accused of similar violence by another former partner (Olga Sharypova) was convicted at first instance for assault and receiving a heavy fine of 450,000 euros, but appealed. In June 2024, after three days of trial, Alexander Zverev’s lawyers and those of Brenda Patea finally reached an amicable agreement, suddenly stopping the procedure with the agreement of the prosecution.
Was Alexander Zverev convicted by the courts?
Although we do not know the amount he paid to his ex, Alexander Zverev was however forced by the court to pay a fine of 200,000 euros (150,000 to the Public Treasury and 50,000 euros to associations). A way of not being officially judged guilty of the alleged acts…
Alexander Zverev and his ex-partner Brenda Patea “came to the conclusion that they wanted to resolve this conflict peacefully, also in the interests of their child“, explained a court spokesperson after the trial was abandoned.
Since then, this has not stopped the player – still competing in this Roland-Garros 2026 – from suffering the wrath of spectators during his matches, such as in April 2025, at the Munich tournament, where a spectator shouted at him: “Come on, you fucking woman-hitter.”
