Simple and effective. It preserves the beauty of your wool sweaters.
It’s the return of the cold, and with it, the pleasure of wrapping up in soft and comfortable knitwear. Whether it’s that precious cashmere found on sale or that wool sweater that’s been with you for years, these have become your essentials as soon as winter comes. However, over time, they can become damaged without you understanding why…
Over the years, your pretty winter sweaters start to pill. These small balls of clumped fibers immediately give a neglected appearance and to get rid of them, you very often take out the essential accessory: the electric pill remover. Faced with a sweater that is starting to fuzz, the reaction is often immediate. We take out of our drawer this little technological object, so satisfying to use, which promises to bring our clothes back to life in a few seconds. Although it is very popular, the pill trimmer works with rotating blades that cut the fiber flush. The problem ? It does not distinguish between pilling (already dead fiber) and healthy fiber in your sweater. With each pass, you remove a layer of material. Over time, your sweater becomes thinner and thinner, losing its warmth and thickness. To maintain your pieces without damaging them, knitwear professionals are unanimous: you should use a wool or cashmere comb. Unlike the razor, the comb acts by gentle friction. By gently passing it over the affected areas, it does not cut the fiber, but only “unhooks” the hairs which have already separated from the main thread.
And to avoid having to take out your comb too often, a few preventive measures are necessary. Wash your sweaters inside out, this limits friction against the drum of the machine. Use a wash pouch to protect fragile fibers. Finally, space out the washes. Wool is a natural material that cleans itself. Often, a simple airing of a hanger is enough to restore its freshness.
Remember, pilling is not necessarily a sign of poor quality. They simply result from the friction of the short fibers. Even the most beautiful cashmere can pill during the first few wears! A small gesture for your knitwear which will, without a doubt, make all the difference in the longevity of your winter wardrobe.
