The banana is known as the most caloric fruit, yet it can be eaten without gaining weight.
With its 87.6 kcal per 100 grams of fruit, the banana is one of the most caloric fruits. But “It’s a myth that if you eat too many bananas, you will gain weight.” Alexandra Murcier, dietitian-nutritionist, immediately explains to us. Banana is full of nutritional benefits, including vitamin B6, known to promote the proper functioning of the nervous and hormonal systems. Its richness in potassium helps it regulate blood pressure and water retention. Easy to take, it’s an excellent snack during a walk for example. It is practical and economical.
“Even if it is more caloric than certain other fruits, the banana ultimately provides few caloriescontinues our specialist. In addition to providing a quick satiety effect, bananas remain a very healthy food. It is not comparable to industrial candy or biscuits.” So it’s the perfect snack that you can have as much as you want when you’re hungry, without fear of gaining weight? Not really…
For the dietitian-nutritionist “You can eat up to 2 bananas a day, whether you are sporty or not. However “sIf you are paying attention to your weight, preferably eat bananas that are still a little green, because they have a lower glycemic index than ripe bananas. Also, you should know that in the event of weight problems, it is not the banana that poses a problem, but the balanced diet in general. When we eat bananas, we tend to only eat bananas as they are an inexpensive fruit that fills you up quickly. However, it is important to vary your diet to meet your vitamin and mineral needs.
Ideally, when you eat a banana as a snack, supplement it with a handful of almonds, hazelnuts or Brazil nuts. “It will be a very interesting energy mix” advises the dietician. Without forgetting that “Banana is also used in baking to replace sugar in certain cakes”. This will limit the rise in blood sugar levels and therefore weight gain.
If you have intestinal sensitivity, it is better to choose ripe bananas (but not too ripe), because when they are green, they are less digestible. Choose organic instead. Finally, be aware that it should be limited in cases of kidney failure, due to its richness in potassium (320 mg/100g).
