Salvatore ‘Toto’ Schillaci, Italy’s star of 1990 World Cup, has died aged 59
The football world is mourning Salvatore ‘Totò’ Schillaci, who passed away at the age of 59. The striker was admitted to hospital last week following treatment for colon cancer.
The striker, played for Inter Milan and Juventusand won the Golden Ball as player of the tournament in the 1990 World Cup and finished second in the Ballon d’Or that year.
President of the FIGC, Gabriele Gravina said: “The unrestrainable celebration, thanks to which his face became synonymous with shared joy, will always be part of our shared Italian football heritage. Totò was a great footballer, a symbol of desire and determination, he knew how to move the Azzurri fans because his football dripped with passion. And it is this indomitable spirit that brought him to be immortal, appreciated by all.”
In remembrancea minute’s silence will be held ahead of every league game from today until the end of the week.
