Mc 6,34-44 – Feria proper of January 9th
Having faith means believing that Jesus is the son of God, yet on today’s Gospel page a story is told that very often corresponds to some experiences we have us too in our lives. In fact, as long as Jesus is a good example for us, a good person, a teacher who knows how to speak well, an effective miracle worker who knows how to heal illnesses, it is almost easy for us to trust him and believe him.
But when he shows that he is much more than all these things put together, that is, he shows that he is the son of God, this scares us. This means that we believe in something but we don’t fully believe it because we are scared by the idea that it is all really true. And then if everything is true we should take back the measures of our existence, we should begin to trust in a new way, we should accept that true faith is knowing that we are disciples of Someone who is stronger than the contrary wind, the storms, the tribulations of this life.
This is why the three words spoken by Jesus are an existential program: «Courage, it’s me, don’t be afraid!». First of all, courage, which is the ability to face things without succumbing to them. Secondly, knowing how to recognize in Jesus something that is greater than our reasoning, our calculations, our logic. Finally, stop letting fear rule because very often our life is conditioned by a thousand fears that toss us left and right. Face, believe, disobey fear. This is the lesson that disciples are taught today and that each of us should learn in turn.
