Three cancer specialists shared their solutions when they crave sweet foods. It’s healthy, delicious and clever.
A balanced diet, limiting sugars and engaging in certain types of exercise help reduce the risk of many chronic diseases, including cancer. However, health specialists are not immune to daily sweet cravings. Three renowned oncologists shared their nutritional habits. And contrary to popular belief, they do not deprive themselves of indulgence.
“The goal is not to eliminate all sweetness from one’s life, this is neither realistic nor necessary“, first recalls Dr Nathan Handley, oncologist at Marcus Institute of Integrative Health (United States) interviewed in the media Parade. But when an irresistible craving for something sweet strikes, these oncologists have gotten into the habit of turning to the same category of foods: raw fresh fruit. Rich in fiber, they act as a shield by slowing the absorption of glucose and producing fatty acids beneficial to the colon.
In detail, Dr. Tan, oncologist at City of Hope (California), shares her favorite snack: a ripe peach accompanied by a handful of pistachios, whose good fats prolong satiety. His colleagues also validate berries (blueberries, raspberries) or a square of dark chocolate with 70% cocoa, particularly concentrated in protective flavanols.
Contrary to popular belief, consuming sugar will not directly “feed” a tumor. The danger of sugary products is actually more indirect: it is excessive intake of added sugars that promotes excess weight. “Obesity leads to a state of chronic inflammation and changes the levels of hormones such as insulin, which creates a favorable environment for the development of several types of cancer. explains Dr. Dillon Cason, hematologist-oncologist. To counteract this harmful effect, the key lies in foods capable of gradually releasing their sugar into the blood thanks to their richness in fiber and antioxidant compounds.
On the other hand, the three specialists insist on the main trap to avoid: sugary drinks (sodas, industrial juices, flavored coffees). Absorbed without any fiber, they cause blood sugar levels to explode and provide invisible calories. Doctors finally remind us that in addition to the choice of their snacks, limiting ultra-processed foods, practicing regular physical activity and maintaining a healthy weight remain the inseparable pillars of prevention.
