Property tax will cost you even more this year. And this is true even if you are a property owner in a municipality that has not voted for a new increase in the rate of this tax. Explanations.

– Despite the decline in inflation, property tax is increasing again this year.
Property tax is increasing again everywhere this year. And yet, a number of municipalities did not vote for new rate increases last spring. “81% of large city territories (34 out of 42) have maintained their rates in 2024”underlines the FSL firm in a report on the tax rates of large local authorities published last May. This is particularly the case for Aix-en-Provence, Bordeaux, Orléans. Even Paris did not vote for an increase after having increased the property tax of owners in the capital by 52% in 2023, the rate having gone from 13.5% to 20.5%.
But that’s without counting the revaluation of rental valuesserving as a tax base at the national level. This is indexed to inflation, more precisely the change in the harmonized consumer price index (HICP) over one year, published in December 2023 by INSEE. Despite the decline in inflation this year, owners will suffer a new automatic increase in property tax of 3.9% after the spectacular increase of 7.1% in 2023. In other words, even if your municipality has not voted for an increase, the property tax rate indicated on your tax notice will be mechanically increased by 3.9% for the year 2024.
Your property tax notice is arriving
And you will soon discover the impact of this increase. The tax authorities will be putting property tax notices online from this Wednesday, August 28 for taxpayers who do not pay monthly. They will be able to download their tax notices in their personal space on the impots.gouv.fr website. The paper property tax notices will arrive in mailboxes no later than September 20. Those who already pay monthly will receive their notices on September 20 in digital format and between September 23 and October 9 in paper format.
