School insurance is not mandatory, but highly recommended in these specific cases. However, many parents are not aware of what it actually covers.
School insurance is often requested by schools at the beginning of the year. But in which cases should you subscribe to it? In concrete terms, it is not mandatory for school activities scheduled in the student’s schedule, such as sports, trips to the gym or swimming lessons, but “strongly recommended” by the Ministry of National Education. On the other hand, school insurance is necessary for optional activities organized by the school (language stay, discovery class, visit to a museum, etc.).
You will also need to take out school insurance if your child goes to daycare, eats in the canteen or participates in extracurricular activities. This will cover any damage or accidents that may occur during these activities. Also note that public schools do not generally require parents to take out school insurance, but this is not necessarily the case for private schools.
Furthermore, if your child causes damage within their school, be aware that in general, they are already covered by your civil liability insurance for multi-risk home insurance. Damage caused to others extends to other members of the family living under the same roof. Any bodily injury they may suffer is also covered if you have already taken out a life accident guarantee contract (GAV) or a similar contract. “Because of its low cost, many parents will buy school insurance without asking whether their child is already covered. However, this amounts to paying twice for the same thing”explains Olivier Moustacakis, co-founder of Assurland.com.
However, if you do not have one of these insurances, it is better to take out school insurance. In addition, if your child has an illness, you can also take out additional guarantees that allow him to continue his schooling at home. Remember that theSchool insurance covers material and/or bodily damage caused or suffered by a child in their school, middle school or high school, or during school activities and extracurricular activities when they take place outside the school establishment. Depending on the contract chosen, additional guarantees are included, such as: racketeering or theft (schoolbag, musical instrument, etc.), broken glasses. But some options are not well known.
According to a study conducted by mobile insurance company Leocare, 53% of French people are unaware that school insurance includes support in the event of harassment. “Even today, school insurance remains little known, as well as the guarantees offered. It includes support systems and services in the event of school bullying, and in particular cyber violence, which today affects one in five middle and high school students. Identity theft, gratuitous attacks, use of photos without consent, revenge porn… Faced with the increase in violence, insurers now offer dedicated coverage as part of school insurance. Hence the importance of being familiar with this daily protection, and of comparing contracts and insurers”, explains Christophe Dandois, co-founder of Leocare.
