For many working women, progressing in one’s career is not only a professional goal, it is a real driver of personal development. However, certain practices or beliefs can limit opportunities and hinder professional success. Between hesitation to value yourself, fear of leaving your comfort zone or neglect of the network, these traps are often unconscious.

Identifying these obstacles and knowing how to avoid them can transform an ordinary professional journey into an ambitious and fulfilling trajectory, where skills, confidence and strategy combine to create real momentum.

Mistake 1: Underestimating the value of your skills

Many women are hesitant to highlight their successes or to ask for promotions and raises. Sometimes it’s the fear of appearing arrogant, or the belief that “the work will speak for itself“. Gold, promoting your skills and results is essential to be recognized and progress quickly.

Advice : Keep a record of successes, prepare your arguments and do not hesitate to present yourself as an expert in your field.

Mistake 2: Not daring to step out of your comfort zone

Staying in known missions or a comfortable position may seem reassuring, but in reality, it limits growth and visibility opportunities. Indeed, the richest career paths are often those where we take calculated risks, where we accept cross-functional projects or new responsibilities.

Advice : Accept complex missions, cross-functional projects or temporary positions of responsibility to broaden your skills and network.

Mistake 3: Neglecting the professional network

The network is one of the most powerful levers for advancing in your career. Indeed, not developing your contacts is missing out on mentorship, strategic advice and key opportunities. However, women sometimes tend to favor solitary work rather than active relationship building.

Advice : Participate in events, join women’s networks or professional communities and actively maintain your relationships.

Mistake 4: Ignoring the importance of mentoring

Mentoring or professional coaching can accelerate progress providing an outside perspective, practical advice and strategic support at key moments in your career. Conversely, going without this type of support can slow down your development and limit your ambitions.

Advice : Identify an internal or external mentor and schedule regular discussions to benefit from advice tailored to your objectives.

Mistake 5: Not knowing how to position yourself in the company

Not expressing one’s ambitions or not negotiating one’s responsibilities and role can block professional developmenteven when the skills are present. Indeed, visibility and recognition are as much linked to performance as to the ability to be heard and defend one’s projects.

Advice : Clearly define your career objectives, communicate your ambitions to your superiors and adopt a proactive posture.

Mistake 6: Underestimating work-life balance

Overloading your schedule, neglecting your sleep or your health can lead to exhaustion and slow down progress in the long term. Consequently, a successful career requires a sustainable approachwhich integrates well-being and performance.

Advice : Plan your time, delegate and take care of yourself to remain efficient and sustainably fulfilled in your career.
