Acute inflammation of the throat and more particularly the tonsils, angina hurts. Here are natural solutions validated by experts to quickly soothe your symptoms.

Angina causes an intense sore throat associated with a feeling of needles when swallowing. In addition to traditional treatments recommended by doctors, natural treatments can easily soothe symptoms. Here are those recommended by naturopath Amélie Mounier.

A salt water gargle

For Amélie Mounier, it is the essential remedy. “Prefer gargling and herbal teas to relieve inflammation, 3 times a day until improvement.” In case of tingling in the throat, use saline water to gargle: 1 half spoonful of salt in a glass of lukewarm water, stir and gargle, do not swallow.

Lemon juice with honey

When angina is well established: add the juice of half a lemon + 1 teaspoon of honey to lukewarm water. Once the gargle is made, it can be swallowed. Honey, which is antibacterial, can be taken in addition to all remedies indicated for angina to relieve pain and reduce inflammation. Propolis can also be interesting for its anti-infectious properties.

A softening herbal tea with thyme or marshmallow

The most suitable plants are thyme (antiseptic), plantain (astringent, antibacterial), marshmallow and mallow (emollient, calms irritation). These plants are anti-inflammatory and astringent. Put 1 tablespoon of the chosen plants in 25 cl of cold water, boil for 5 minutes, leave to infuse off the heat for 10 minutes, filter and gargle 3 times a day.

As a herbal tea (infusion or decoction): 1 tablespoon for 1 cup of water, i.e. infuse for 10-15 minutes and drink, or as a decoction (like the preparation above) to drink throughout the day. Be careful at high doses with the mild laxative effect.

Thyme essential oil

Anti-infectious and stimulating the immune system, thyme essential oil can be taken orally at a rate of 2 drops in a little honey or pure 3 times a day for a maximum of 7 days. Very effective, it improves symptoms very quickly, according to the naturopath. Be careful to respect the uses:

  • Prohibited in children under 6 years old
  • From 6 years old:1 drop 2 times a day for 7 days
  • From 12 years old: 1 drop, 3 times a day for 7 days

In local massage on the neck and nape:

  • For adults : 2 drops, 3 times a day pure or in a little vegetable oil.
  • For children aged 3 to 12: 1 drop in a little vegetable oil to apply 2-3 times a day.

Ravintsara essential oil underfoot

Immunostimulating, ravintsara essential oil is useful for stimulating the immune system in the event of an infection such as angina. To use it:

For external use : apply 1 pure drop for prevention either on the arch of the foot or on the hollow of the wrist, rub the wrists against each other. It is possible to then breathe deeply into your wrists. To do as soon as the cold arrives, during the winter for prevention.

For internal use : 1 drop in a little honey or on bread crumbs to take at the first symptoms (3 times a day for a maximum of 7 days).

It is possible to combine: 1 drop of ravintsara + 1 drop of Thyme thujanol.

Echinacea mother tincture

It stimulates the immune system. It helps fight against cold and the first signs of angina. Adults and adolescents over 12 years old can take 20-25 drops 3-5 times a day in water before meals. Children from 4 years old take 10 drops 3 to 5 times a day. Refer to the usage precautions at the end of the article.

In addition:

  • Eliminate dairy products, proteins, gluten until the angina has passed (they are pro-inflammatory).
  • Favor vegetables, fruits, compote, cold or hot soups depending on the soothing effect felt, and hydrate well.
  • Get as much rest as possible.

Important precautions

If there is no rapid improvement, consult a doctor within 48 hours. Intense sore throat that prevents swallowing, associated with fever, headache and fatigue are strong indicators. The doctor takes a quick sample which determines the viral or bacterial origin of the angina. The latter requires antibiotic treatment. Before stimulating the immune system, it is necessary to take precautions and seek the advice of your doctor. “The immune system should not especially not be stimulated in the event of autoimmune diseases, cancer in particular those which affect the immune system and organic fluids (lymphoma, leukemia in particular), in pregnant or breastfeeding women. And avoid it in children” warns the naturopath. Also watch out for allergies to honey and propolis. It is best to do a test before embarking on a treatment.

With the contribution of Amélie Mounier, certified FENA naturopath, in Vincennes.
