The cleaver has fallen and it is painful for the most prudent savers. As of August 1, the remuneration of booklet A will fall again, going from 2.4% to 1.7%, as announced by the Minister of the Economy, Eric Lombard, Wednesday July 16. Given the decline in inflation in recent months, this decrease had however been partly anticipated by savers, who therefore used this savings solution since the start of the year: between January and May, “The collection reaches only 2.76 billion euros compared to 8.91 billion euros over the same period of 2024”note the circle of savings.
Now that the decline is acted, the temptation to redirect its savings towards a more remunerative placement may be all the greater. Be careful however if you too want to withdraw funds from your booklet A to place them elsewhere. Indeed, if you can withdraw at any time, the date on which it will be implemented on the interests affected at the end of the year. On the regulated booklets (booklet A, LDDS, LEP, etc.), interest is indeed calculated according to the fortnight rule: every fifteen days (the 1st and the 16th of each month), the booklet produces interests according to the sums present in the previous fifteen days.
Wait for the 1st or 16 of the month to withdraw the sum you need
Also, to maximize your operation, we usually advise to withdraw the amount desired once the interest has been generated, that is after the 1st or 16 of each month. Regarding the rate change of August 1, it is unfortunately too late: the sums present on your booklet A since July 16 will generate interest at the new rate of 1.7% on August 1. However, it is best to wait until August 2 to “remove your balls”. Indeed, if you withdraw all or part of your savings in the coming days, this amount will not be taken into account at all for the calculation of interest on August 1.
Admittedly, at the new rate, the difference may be minimal: it’s up to you to see whether it is worth waiting or not before making the transfer to your current account or another savings product. At the new rate of 1.7%, you will deprive yourself, for example, of 3.5 euros in interest on the current fortnight if you withdraw 5,000 euros, and 16 euros if you empty your booklet A (22,950 euros). Patience does not always pay.
