Vesuvius: a fire devastated the National Park
A vast fire affected the side of Monte Somma, in the heart of the Vesuvius National Park, starting from the afternoon of Friday 8 August, which began in the pine forest of Terzigno. The flames propagated quickly, driven by the wind and high temperatures, extending to a front of about 3 km and reducing to ash beyond 500 hectares of vegetation.
The shutdown operations are underway without stopping thanks to the coordinated intervention of firefighters, civil protection, army and dozens of volunteers. From the sky they are operating 6 Canadair And several helicopters. The column of smoke, also visible from space, obscured the sky on the Gulf of Naples.
Although at the moment there are no damage to the homes or seriously injured, the environmental impact is severe: vineyards of Lacryma Christi, cultivations of cherry tomatoes of the Piennolo and apricot leather pellecchio have been damaged hard, with heavy consequences for the local economy
The Nola prosecutor has opened a file to investigate the causes of the stake. At the moment there have been no intentions of willful misconduct, but a malicious or culpable origin is not excluded, and a specialized task force is at work.
Etna: new eruptive activity at altitude
On the opposite front of the peninsula, Etna recorded a new eruptive activity with the opening of a new effusive mouth located around 3,000 meters above sea level. No ash emissions have been reported, and Catania airport continues to operate normally.
These are phenomena in line with the high eruptive frequency of the volcano, which has long been the subject of constant monitoring by the Ingv and the Etnas early alert system, capable of tracing and promptly reporting explosive activities and lava fountains.
