Veterinarians seem unanimous: this breed of dog is the most vulnerable. Although irresistible, these doggies require a lot of medical care and therefore special attention.

We know that adopting an animal is not a decision to be taken lightly. And especially not according to the physical criterion: you can fall for the adorable face of a dog, but it is above all its personality and its needs that must be studied. Some will like an apartment, others in a large house with a garden; some will be ideal companions for your children, others will be more comfortable surrounded by adults; some can spend the day alone without problem, others will end up wasting away without their owner nearby… In short, all breeds are not necessarily adapted to all lifestyles. And there is a type of dog for which it is better to think twice before adopting.

From breathing difficulties to skin allergies, spinal malformations, gastrointestinal problems and even eye diseases, this breed of dog is undoubtedly one of those with the most vulnerable health. Result: long hours spent in veterinary offices, and therefore, medical costs that accumulate throughout life. On social networks, many veterinarians are warning about these adorable balls of fur that they would not choose to adopt as professionals. At the top of the list, we find in particular… the French bulldog.

Much appreciated, this breed of dog with its irresistible appearance is not made for everyone: both in terms of affection and care and finances, you have to be ready to cope. Too few owners are aware of the risks faced by their little companions, and therefore fail to take care of them properly. “When it’s not respiratory problems, it’s skin problems. When it’s not skin problems, it’s back problems. They cost so much! As a veterinarian, I see these dogs all the time, for all kinds of medical problems. I would never adopt a French bulldog”explains for example Doctor Amir Anwary, alias “Amir the Vet” on his TikTok account, followed by more than 873,000 followers. Same story with veterinary surgeon “Ben the Vet”: “There are specimens of these dogs that are healthier than others, but they are prone to so many problems. For me, that’s enough to never want to have one.”

More broadly, veterinarians warn about brachycephalic dog breeds, which are more prone to these health problems than others. Among them, we therefore include the French bulldog of course, but also the English bulldogs, the boxer, the pug, the Staffordshire bull terrier, the shih tzu, the shar pei, the Boston terrier, the Pekingese, the Cavalier King Charles, and even the Lhasa Apso.
