Cinema enters the Vatican. A desire of Pope Leo who, «in the year of the Jubilee» asked to «deepen the dialogue with the world of cinema and in particular with actors and directors, exploring the possibilities that artistic creativity offers to the mission of the Church and the promotion of human values». And so, while Prevost reveals that the films dearest to him are It’s a Wonderful Life (1946) by Frank Capra; The Sound of Music (1965) by Robert Wise; Ordinary People (1980) by Robert Redford; Life is Beautiful (1997) by Roberto Benigni, Gianni Amelio and Monica Bellucci, Roberto Andò and Judd Apatow, Francesca Archibugi, Marco Bellocchio, Sergio Castellitto, Liliana Cavani, Maria Grazia Cucinotta, Abel Ferrara, Dante Ferretti and Francesca Lo Schiavo, Matteo Garrone, Dag Johan Haugerund, Emir Nemanja Kusturica, Spike enter the apostolic palace. Lee, Ferzan Özpetek, Giacomo Poretti, Stefania Sandrelli, Albert Serra, Giuseppe Tornatore, Raoul Bova, Gus Van Sant, to name just a few of the film stars.
The meeting, promoted by the Dicastery for Culture and Education in collaboration with the Dicastery for Communication and the Vatican Museums, follows in the wake of the events dedicated to the Figurative Arts (June 2023), Humor (June 2024) and is in continuity with the recent Jubilee of Artists and the World of Culture, celebrated last February and which Pope Francis was unable to attend due to being hospitalized at Gemelli.
Pope Bergoglio, however, had repeatedly met painters and comedians, actors, musicians, directors, inviting them to cultivate beauty as a path to peace.
