Nostalgia when you hold us…
Fashionistas are creatures of habit. They tirelessly follow, to the millimeter, the same calendar every year. But if there are meetings in which all the brands participate without negotiating, certain events are sometimes specific to one house. The Métiers d’art fashion shows, taking place once a year, are for example exclusive to a famous label established on rue Cambon. During these meetings, Chanel presents a collection specially dedicated to highlighting the know-how of the artisans and workshops who help it in the creation of exceptional pieces.
The last edition took place on December 2 in New York. Led vigorously by Matthieu Blazy, this Métiers d’art collection sets up shop in the Bowery metro station. The theme? New York City. Thus, she not only paid tribute to the artisans of the 19M as usual, but also to emblematic figures from the world of comics and comics – universes strongly associated with the imagination of this city. Among the iconic characters that the creator brings to life; Superman, SpidermanTony the Tiger Frosties but also another cartoon icon that rocked our young years.
A true comic book hero who ended up bursting onto the screens of French television, he takes the form of a large animal with an endless tail, half-monkey, half-cheetah. In France, he even invaded our cinemas in the company of Alain Chabat. Yellow with black-spotted fur here and there, he is agile, strong and defends the victims of injustice in the fictional territories of Palombia. Born in 1952 at the instigation of Belgian designer André Franquin, the furry beast is recognizable by its cry: “hooba houba”. You will have understood, it is Marsupilami.
It is also to pay tribute to the heroism of today’s women that Matthieu Blazy forges this link with comic book characters. “Heroines of their own story”, the models who parade out of the carriage fully embody the spirit through their clothes, their walk, their attitude.
The 81 looks are punctuated with subtle nods to the city; from memories of toddlers to great political figures, power and style – like Diana Vreeland or Jackie Kennedy. And if because of these countless references, some people cry cacophony and incoherence, the collection does have a common thread: women of influence in New York City.
Regardless, skepticism and criticism in no way diminish the popularity of the brand: it is at the top of searches on TagWalk during the week of December 2 to 9.
