A favorite decorative object as soon as the cold returns to the house, it warms and soothes the atmosphere effortlessly. But, behind this gentle and reassuring image hides an everyday pollutant, capable of making indoor air as heavy as a short car journey.

When the days get shorter and the cold sets in, many people seek to recreate a comforting cocoon at home. Soft lighting, soft blankets, hot drinks… and often, a small star object sits at the center of this cozy atmosphere. It diffuses a golden glow, a vanilla or woody scent, and promises serenity and softness. It’s a shame that this ritual, as widespread as it is soothing, is synonymous with unsuspected danger for the home and the quality of indoor air.

According to several recent studies, winter transforms our interiors into veritable bubbles of domestic pollution. The cause: the lack of ventilation, continuous heating, and the increased use of perfuming products. Researchers are warning of alarming levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) measured in homes during the cold season, which can irritate the respiratory tract or aggravate certain allergies. And one culprit stands out for its subtlety: small, decorative and yet formidable.

This unexpected suspect? The scented candle made from paraffin, a petroleum derivative. When burning, it releases substances such as benzene and toluene, pollutants also present in exhaust gases. Result: a few candles lit each evening can emit as many fine particles as a short car journey. A real paradox when you are looking to make your interior more welcoming and healthier. The cocooning effect therefore has a much less pleasant side – that of depleted indoor air and potentially harmful to health.

Fortunately, breathing better without giving up the warm atmosphere remains possible. Natural candles made from soy, rapeseed or beeswax, accompanied by untreated cotton wicks, offer a more respectful alternative. They bring the same decorative charm while preserving the air quality of the house. You can also opt for essential oil diffusers, or even make your own homemade candles with organic ingredients. The idea: combine comfort, decoration and air quality, to continue to enjoy the long winter evenings without clouds… or invisible smoke.
